that all depends on what make of truck you have. some have a bolt that needs to be removed to allow wheel carrier to drop. some have a cable that cranks down ,and Ford from at least year 2000, has a key, that fits on end of jack handle that fits into spare tire crank to wind down te wheel. if this key is lost, you will have to purchase a new one ,and hope you have the proper key number to do this. on a used truck i just purchased, the key was missing, but the registration card was still in truck.we did try the tire key from 8 other ford trucks but not one of them matched,so a quick phone call with the number on the card and $22-oo laters, i have the correct key ,for spare tire. without that key, the only wy to g et spare out is to cut the cable.
