make sure that it has a clean environment. Also you should have some type of vitamins to go with their food. If their tail gets fat, that is a good sign. It is a sign telling you that your gecko is getting all of the vitamins and protein it needs and, is healthy.
You can handle a leopard gecko whenever you want to but the best time to handle them is in the evening because they are nocturnal.
For a pet a gecko is much better. It is easier to handle and take care of.

Depending on the species of gecko will determine their husbandry. Geckos coming from rain forests prefer much more humidity over direct sun heat, while species coming from deserts enjoy the heat and tend to bask in it. A Crested gecko ranging from New Caledonia, cannot withstand temperatures higher than 80F.
They can sleep anywhere, but perferably a dark spot, like under a dome. Also they are nocturnal, so leave your heat (day) light on for 5-6 hrs., and the gecko can sleep easier. Also if you handle them, you might be able to make them diurnal. I say this from experience.
