Voluntary hyperventilation depresses the respiratory center via the decrease in partial pressure of carbon dioxide which raises cerebrospinal fluid pH.
Repeated deep breaths 5-10 times in rapid succession will allow you to hold your breath for a longer period.
You should not try and hold your breath for too long or you may pass out. However, some people can hold their breath for longer than others quite naturally and it is possible to train some people to hold their breath for surprising amounts of time (like free divers).
However, a note of caution: NEVER hyperventilate when trying to hold your breath underwater. This is because the desire to breath is NOT brought on by a lack of oxygen but by a buildup of CO2 in the blood. Hyperventilating (breathing in and out fast for a bit) reduces the levels of CO2 in the blood, but does NOT increase the O2 significantly. You can therefore pass out before you feel the need to breathe, and if this happens when you are in the water you will drown.
You breath in and don't breath out. Simple as that.
Take a few deep breaths before, then on the last one suck in oxygen as much as you can. Also, when you're underwater don't move at all, it saves energy.
type in david blaine how he did it =)
