Center channel speakers are used for surround sound audiovisual systems in order to provide the effect that the sound is coming right from the screen. This is done by placing the center channel speaker in the center of and behind the projection screen.
If the speakers are not powered (they don't plug into the wall), you can cut off the RCA plug, strip back the wires to a negative and positive lead, and connect them to the speaker posts of the receiver.
Stereos use basic left and right speakers. In 4 channel stereos the add in 2 more channels to move the sound around you. In 5 channel surround they add a center channel for voice coming from a picture generated in from of you. Helps pull you to the person talking on the screen. 5.1 utilizes this and then adds the .1 which is an effects speaker, the subwoofer. Then you feel the roar of an engine taking off.

That would be the idea of a "surround sound system". Unless you are talking about hooking up more than one speaker to the same exact port on the receiver. If so than yes, but you will not get true surround sound. For instance: You hook up two speakers to the same port, lets pick the front left channel, and then place one to the front left of the TV and the other to the back right you will get the front left's audio coming from behind you.
