Homes are single phase. You can have 220VAC in a home, although not all homes have 220VAC. In the United States and Canada, the 240VAC is "center-tapped_ to provide 2 120 Volt halves. It doesn't matter which half is used on a 120 volt line, just so long as the house is APPROXIMATELY balanced between the two halves.

Answer

In some countries, it is normal for residences to be supplied with three-phase. In European countries, the lines (not 'phases') are identifed by the colour of the insulation -brown, black, and grey. The neutral is blue.

In three-phase systems, individual phases are notidentified. But individual lines are, according to the relevant national electrical standards, including colours (e.g. brown-black-grey), letters (e.g. A-B-C), numbers (e.g. 1-2-3), or alpha-numerics (e.g. L1-L2-L3).

Individual phases, therefore, may be identified by the lines between which they are connected. For example, 'phase brown-grey', 'phase A-B', 'phase 1-2', 'phase L1-L2', etc.
