On a single winding secondary the connection terminals are labeled X1 and X2. A ground wire is connected to the X2 terminal and then connected to the transformer frame and then connected to the system ground.

In Europe, centre-tap Transformers are not used for single-phase supplies. The neutral is provided by simply earthing (grounding) one end of the secondary winding, and taking the line conductor from the opposite end. This provides a single nominal voltage of 230 V between line and neutral. The earth conductor for the secondary winding is segregrated from the earth conductor which earths the transformer's core and tank.

The neutral point is produced by a grounded center tap on the secondary. The two "legs" form the two split-phase hots. Typically, in the US or Canada, though they are now called 120 V and 240 V nominal service voltages, on average there is 117 VAC from neutral to either leg and 234 VAC from leg to leg.

Note

Nowadays in North America - and elsewhere in the many other countries around the world which use similar alternating current (ac) power services - the voltages supplied to homes are nominally 120 volts and 240 volts + or - 10%. The actual variation from nominal at any instant in time will depend partly on the distance you are from the nearest power sub-station and partly on the overall load being drawn by your neighbors who are using the same power service.

However - partly for historical reasons and partly as a result of the fact that "old habits die hard" - many people still call their home voltages "110" volts and "220" volts. It really doesn't matter because the actual voltage you get could vary from 132 V down to 108 V in the case of the nominal 120 V, and from 264 V down to 216 V in the case of the nominal 240 V.

It depends on the voltage level. For low voltages, an ammeter could be used. For high voltages it is necessary for the ammeter to be electrically isolated from the current you wish to measure, so a current transformer (CT) will have to be used. A CT might also be necessary if the value of current to be measured is very high.
