There is no universal symbol for a data outlets like there are for electrical outlets and switches. A triangle is probably the most common symbol used, which also happens to be the most popular symbol for a Telephone outlet. To differentiate between the two, a "T" for telephone or "D" for data (or even "C" for cable TV) might be placed inside the triangle. Also filled and open triangles can be used to differentiate between the two. A combination data/phone outlet can be easily identified using this convention by using a half filled/half open triangle. The best way to be sure what symbol the designer had in mind is to check with the Symbol Legend which should be located somewhere on any competently produced set of plans.
If you are using a iPod or an iPad with no data plan, you will need a WiFi connection. If you are using an iPhone or an iPad with a data plan, you do not need a WiFi connection depending on the speed and coverage. However, when on an iPhone or iPad with a data plan, it is always best to be connected to a WiFI connection so you don't incur with an overage charges unless you have a unlimited data plan. AT&T requires you to buy one of their data plans. The phone itself does NOT require a data plan to function or surf the internet.
