Water pump on a Forester, and for most recently made cars with a timing belt, is driven by the timing belt. They should both be changed at the same time, never one without the other. This is not a job for a casual mechanic because at least one piece of specialized equipment is necessary to remove the pulley from the front of the engine. If you want to give it a try, spend the $20 and buy a Haynes manual at your local auto parts store. Review the procedure and see if you still want to tackle the job. If not, the manual is still a good thing to have around for the do-it-yourselfer and a good investment. --Ken
Mounted on top and inside the fuel tank.
The water pump does not have a "tensioner".

inside the motor
First remove all hoses, then remove the radiator, then remove the bolts of the water pump pulley (the big one in the middle of the engine), then remove all belts, you will see some bolts which fasten the pump to the block (around where thepulley was) take them all out and the water pum will be loose and easy to be removed.
That will be what the fan on the front of the engine bolts to.
Remove the belt from your diesel pump. Remove the diesel pump fuel lines. Remove the diesel pump retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install your new diesel pump.
