The bevel should be up; with bevel down the glass top is not making full contact with the supporting edge on the wood frame.
If something has a beveled edge, it means that edge is not square (90ΒΊ) with the surface.
Because the bevel helps the needle cut through the skin with minimum trauma.
When something is beveled, it is cut or finished "at a slant" to a reference plane. Take a beveled mirror. The surface of the mirror is flat, but the edges are cut (ground off, actually) at an angle to the plane of the surface of the mirror. That part of the mirror that was ground down is the bevel.
Beveled edges are a common aesthetic nicety added to window panes and mirrors. --Allyy.

This process, called the butt-weld process is the basis for our current pipe-making procedures. In his method, thin sheets of iron were heated and drawn through a cone-shaped opening. As the metal went through the opening, its edges curled up and created a pipe shape. The two ends were welded together to finish the pipe. The first manufacturing plant to use this process in the United States was opened in 1832 in Philadelphia. So the method is the two sides are welded as they butt together without overlapping. The same method is used to weld two pipes together as they are butted together and welded around the seams.
They are used when the angle of rotation needs to be changed. The rotation of a vertical rod can be changed to rotation of a horizontal rod by the use of beveled gears. <><><><><> bevel gears ARE two the wheels together or just two two wheels so pretty much you can find bevel gears in objects like .... can opener cars in a hand drill.. and many more
Orifice plates which are used in flow measurement are mostly concentric "square-edge" type. The bore of the orifice is not constant when one moves from the upstream side to the downstream side along the cross section. The bore size is constant for a few mm only and then expands till it reaches the downstream face. This inclined cut is called the bevel in an orifice. The main reason to have a bevel in the orifice is to avoid turbulence thereby providing more accuracy to the measurement. Restriction Orifice plates are not beveled since their intent is to reduce the pressure only.
# A slanting surface or bevel on the edge of a cutting tool, such as a chisel. # The upper, faceted portion of a cut gem, above the girdle and below the table. # A groove or flange designed to hold a beveled edge, as of a watch crystal or a gem.
