You don't need a codec or codec package. You need a video/audio converter to convert media to one of the 'output source' formats used by WMM (Windows Movie Maker) that are listed below:
Video files: .asf, .avi, dvr-ms, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, .wmv
Audio files: .aif, .aifc, .aiff, .asf, .au, .mp2, .mp3, .mpa, .snd, .wav, .wma
Picture files: .bmp, .dib, .emf, .gif, .jfif, .jpe, .jpeg, .jpg, .png, .tif, .tiff, .wmf
You can download a free video/audio converter online (simply Google: free video converters). Once you have downloaded a video converter, locate and convert the camera media to one of the file name extensions listed above.
When you have successfully converted the media, you will be able to import and edit it in WMM from the Kodak Gallery.
Yes it is. You can download Windows Movie Maker from microsoft's website.
As far as I know, you can only install plug-ins on Windows Live Movie Maker version.
How are you trying to import the video? With Windows Movie Maker, Windows Photo Gallery (or other program)? Windows Photo Gallery should work for importing your hd camcorder video. Windows Movie Maker is rather persnickety with importing (my experience anyhow). Open Windows Photo Gallery and click on File, Import from Scanner or Camera.
If you have a computer with Windows Me, XP, or Vista, then Windows Movie Maker will already come installed on it by default. Windows 7 does not have it; however, you can manually download and install Windows Movie Maker onto a Windows 7 computer.
No.

If you previously tried to download Windows Movie Maker for Windows 8, but it said that both the movie and photo programs were installed then you will not have to re-install. The easiest way to find it on your computer is to select the Windows logo on the left and type "Windows Movie Maker" (without quotes) into the search bar.
If you are running Windows xp mode on Windows 7 professional, ultimate, or enterprise
Download and install the newest version of the program.
No.Windows 7 does not offer Windows Movie Maker, Photo Gallery or Mail. It is available as a free download package called Windows Live Essentials. You can download the XP version of Movie Maker, from the Microsoft Website, which works in Windows 7. See the Related links below.
You can download and install Windows Live Movie Maker (which is the newest version out). However, that version does not have all the features and functionality of the 2.6 version.
If you are unable to import the video from the JVC using Windows Movie Maker, then import it to your computer using your Windows Photo Gallery.
