I removed the distributor in my 96 gmc yukon but I forgot to mark it before removing it.What do I need to do to get it back in.
No, but you can install a spring suspension.
1 - 5 - 4 - 2 - 6 - 3 - 7 - 8 The distributor rotor turns COUNTERCLOCKWISE for your 302 cubic inch V8 / 5.0 L ( according to motorcraft.com )
On the distributor shaft, there is a painted mark, aline this with the two holes in the distributor shaft, located just below the gear. Mark the outside of the distributor where the rotor is pointed. On the inside of the distributor, you will find two cast marks, one stamped with an 8 and the other with a 6. For V-8's rotate the rotor until it is aligned with the 8. Now mark this location on the outside of the distributor. They should be about 45 degrees apart. The first mark is the direction the rotor should be pointing when you begin to install the distributor. When the distributor is fully seated, the rotor should be pointed to the 8 and the second mark. Snug the distributor into place and place the distributor cap on and tighten the screws for the cap. The plug wire post should be perpendicular to the center line of the engine.
Turn the engine until the #1 plug is at TDC on the compression stroke. Mark the distributor at that location. Install the new distributor and turn until you are at the exact same location. Have the timing checked after you get it started.
Locate the distributor and mark where timing is set at. Loosen the 3 bolts holding the distributor in place. Disconnect any wiring. Pull off the o-ring and install the new one.
You must make sure you have the distributer mark aligned with mark on the intake manifold. The PCM makes all the timing adjustments. Info: The distributor is only used for the cam position, and spark distrubition.
Mark all of the spark plug wires with their respective cylinder numbers. Remove spark plug wires from distributor. Remove 2 screws that retain distributor cap. Using a paint marker, mark the location of the rotor with respect to the distributor housing. Remove the 2 distributor hold down bolts. Pull distributor from engine. Install new distributor in reverse order, being sure to insert the new distributor with the rotor in the same orientation as the one that you took out.

Mark where the wires go, disconnect the wire connector, remove 4 screws and remove. Reverse the procedure to install.
