I would not recommend that you try. A block heater is preferred.

I have a 95 villager and it came from the factory with a block heater.Look around the headlights for the plug tucked away.
Yes you will have a heater control valve but try and locate one from other than the dealer because it will cost you around $135.00 dollars.........

Low coolant? Bad thermostat? Heater core plugged or airbound? Heat control cable not working?

Not all models had a heater control valve. If it has one it's either right in front of the firewall by where the heater hoses go in, or else under the dash near the heater core.
If it is defective it will need to be replaced.
There would only be a rear heater core if there was a rear heater, which I don't believe was an option.
Near the firewall behind the engine, or under the dash near the heater core.
In the lower part of the dashboard on the passenger side.
