disconnect battery lift and place vehicle on jack stands unplug/unbolt power wires and mark them pos or neg unbolt the starter from the engine 2 or 3 bolts from either side replace
Do not install the shims. Your starter should work fine.
Pull your starter down, the cylinder on top of the starter that the main 12v cable is bolted to is what you are looking for. jr
you shouldn't need a diagram...the starter is a cylinder shaped object that is bolted to the motor...it has 3 bolts holding it to the motor...one plug that runs from the starter(very small plug)...you are looking for a small electric motor that mounts to the engine...you can't miss it with all that space you have in that old chevy...small electric motor with one wire and three bolts the bolt pattern is usually triangular

Push it back as far as you can then push it up or pull it down until the "nose" of the starter clears and remove the starter, you will have to reverse the way you removed it to re-install it.
