Hi ....

#1 The bar or towel spigot - If you have already bought it ignore this bit ... otherwise try to make it as light as possible itself. (Which is why I would normally recommend a spigot rather than a towel rail.

#2 What you put on it and How it's treated - a hollow core door by definition is not as strong as a normal solid piece of timber or a wall mounted towel rail.
Even if you install fixing blocks as shown in step #4 it will only be as strong as the veneer is !

#3 Installation - use some chipboard screws and "Just Do IT" .... (make sure before you start that the screw will not stick out the other side when you're finished !)

NOTE: This may not be strong enough or may pull out overtime or with heavy use .... but initially my suggestion is "Just Do It"

#4 If you need to repair or improve OR just want to do the job as well as it can possibly be done then:
A) Drill holes (or use the screw holes you previously made)

B) Squeeze in a non-expanding base into the hollow core door
(between the sheets of veneer there is normally a diamond shaped open grid made of cardboard that will act as a barrier to hold your diamond shaped fixing block in place.

C) Wait for your fixing blocks to dry solid

D) Screw your screws into the fixing blocks you have made inside the door

Good Luck

When installing a towel bar, you should first choose a good place to put it, preferably not directly behind the bathroom door. To install it, the standard placement is 48" from the floor. Drill your holes in the wall, install the wall fastener, then mount your towel bar onto the hardware.

A towel rack is easy to install. To install it you will need a leveling measuring tape, screws and a screwdriver. Measure the height and balance then screw on.

A hollow metal door is constructed of two face sheets of cold rolled steel sandwiching a core material. Typical core materials are polystyrene, cardboard honeycomb, fiberboard or urethane. Can you hang a towel bar behind the door of a bathroom?

Sure, but make sure that there is protection for the wall behind it, so that the bar does not accidentally punch through the wall. However, if the door is a hollow door, I am not sure how much weight it will hold or how you would put in anchors, since the wood is not very thick. There was a towel bar on the wall behind a door in one house that I lived in and it worked okay.

Types of door?

Hollow core, paneled, interior, exterior, solid wood, glass, french, sliding, bi-fold, ......I don't know for sure what you are asking.

How do you put a window in a hollow core door?

to attach to a hollow core door you need what is known as a dry wall or gyp-rock anchor. all depending on what country you live in. these are made to screw into surfaces up to about 15 millimeters thick and hold into them. Do yourself a favour and don'r bother trying to hang it. it would be a waist of otherwise good fittings. The best thing you can do with the door is to build a bonefire, but let let me know where you live because I'm freezing here in the U.K.
