Phsyically a young beagle needs lots of exercise, lots of water and his food needs to be monitored and rationed so he doesnt become overweight. ice cubes, carrots and other natural foods are good treats in place of store bought dog treats with lots of extra calories and unneccessary carbs. emotionally, beagles love positive reinforcement, and love to be treated like a member of the family. they dont like to be scolded which is why its best to use the positive reinforcement approach- their feelings get hurt easily.

to care for a beagle, it needs lots of open space to run when it is young, but as it gets older, it will not need as much. they should be fed a little more then a cup of dog food twice a day. Beagles do not need to get their hair cut at all, but they should be brushed to get all the extra hair off of them so that they don't shed as much. they should have a bath about one every week and a half, they like to roll in the dirt. they should also be taken on a walk once a day.

Beagles are very sweet, loving and loyal dogs, and are great for show dogs. they learn very easily and are friendly around strangers. these dogs are easily my favorite type of dog.

People are often charmed by a beagle's winning personality because they are usually absolute dears and they are really cute dogs. When they see that my dog adores children, I can see them thinking that maybe they have found the ideal pet for their household. Thus, I always warn them up front that beagles are difficult to train (I got this pure bred dog for free when she was a year old because her owners could not figure a way to get it across that using the house as a toilet was not okay and they also could not get her to walk properly on a leash. She also chewed up the carpet and did other bad things out of sheer frustration because she did not get enough physical activity and did not have enough to occupy her mind). I really linger on the problems that the would-be owners had with the dog to make it clear that beagles are not for every would-be dog owner. Then I make sure that they know that it took consistent effort and a training harness to correct the problems. Again, I am careful to emphasize the amount of personal time and commitment that it took to correct the problem. Within two months, most of the problems were solved but then again, I have had dogs, cats and horses all of my life. Bear in mind, I do not beat or strike my animals at all except I might cuff an over-exuberant puppy for nipping too hard during play (mind you, I do NOT say to knock them across the room, I said an immediate sharp slap to the nose and a harsh verbal reprimand and the play time should end immediately to let them know that this is unacceptable behavior) after which you completely ignore them for the next 15 minutes to half hour.

As a bonus, here is the observation that helped to potty train my beagle: The previous owners gave her table food which is not a good idea. The increase in salt intake was not good for the dog. She did much better with me because I give my dogs few, if any, table scraps or "people food." Dogs cannot excrete salt through their pores like humans and our food is too salty. It stresses their kidneys. Yes, you can even put them in renal (kidney) failure by giving them too much people food. I call it death by love. Did I need a vet to tell me this? No--this was simple observation on the part of an owner who likes and understands dogs and has done a bit of reading.

Dog Breeds whose purpose is hunting or working often have specific needs. If you intend to keep them as a housepet, then you are probably going to have to make some accomodations. While this may vary from individual to individual, you can bet that the beagle is going to bay alot, have really acute hearing, have a strong pack instinct, have a gr-r-rrreat sense of smell, be a four-legged garbage disposal (i.e., if it smells like food, it must be food and this includes packaging), and have alot of energy and love children.

My training efforts were helped by the fact that I have an old guard dog (half lab and half dobe who is the love of my life) who is 16. I believe that his presence helped to satisfy her pack instinct. God forbid, when he passes, I plan on taking the beagle most everywhere with me to relieve the boredom of being left in an apartment all day while I am at work. There will be a period of adjustment and there might be some bad behaviors until the new routine gets worked out. I might have to reevaluate and make adjustments. However, the key phrase here is that I know that adjustments will need to be made on my part and I accept that. While I have had hunting dogs, I was not at all familiar with beagles and have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they are athletic little cusses. The flip side of that coin is that they can become hyperactive and do destructive things if not given enough exercise. For me, that is not a problem but it might be for some owners. Since I am a very active middle aged woman who lives alone, this will be the ideal companion dog for me. She will be taught to ride in my kayak this summer and already loves to go to the pet store and ride in the car. If it is a dual income household with a busy social life or children who are in alot of activities with limited free time to devote to an animal, then a beagle or any other hunting dog or working dog is NOT A GOOD CHOICE!!!!

lots of TLC and romps in a park belly rubs, and kindness and affection for you to be in charge and spend time with him he will be happiest being your follower (companion) not your leader and all dogs enjoy learning new tricks your beagle will love playing with a toy that feels light and feathery like a bird because that is what beagles like to do hold an animal in their mouth mostly for smaller dogs and hounds a bird or furry rabbit like feeling toy because they are hunting dogs

How is beagle hair?

I have a Beagle myself, & the thing is that it sheds it's Winter fur in the Spring, which can be a little messy, but not as bad as dogs with more fur. Beagles have short hair, so it's pretty easy to take care of.
