An arm sling usually just support the arm in a neutral posisition , while an elevation sling supports the arm and keep it elevated above the heart leve to reduce swelling and pain. You would also yse them for different things, an arm sling for fractures to the lower arm or wrist and an elevation sling for fractures to the collarbone upper arm or fingers.

You would for sure on the lower arm to keep the arm raised to minimize swelling and pain. It will have no affect for the upper arm (above the elbow).

With at least one of your arms, you are probably able to swing your arm back so that your hand is pointing up, palm against your spine, and your hand is as high up toward your head as you can get it. If it is your right arm, continue to curl your arm/hand toward your right shoulder. You'll feel the edge of a flat bone. That is your right shoulder blade. Ditto on the left.
"You would wear it on your right arm." Is not correct. A black armband should be worn on your left arm. The reason for this is that the armband represents the deceased and by wearing the armband you are wanting to keep the deceased close to your heart. Your left arm is the one closer to your heart.
