At last, I have just heard about a new RFID (Radio Frequency ID) technology from Linen Technology Tracking, USA that provides washable security tags that are stitched into towels (and other items likely to be taken by guests) that set off an alarm when guests try and leave the hotel with them in their suitcases, I believe a hotel in Hawaii and been testing the devices and towel theft has fallen from 4,000 per month to under 750 since they introduced the concept last year. The hotel has been saving over £9,000 per month. The claim from the company is that the tags can last up to 300 wash cycles.
It all depends upon how much you are willing to spend and the lengths you are willing to go to:
Notices are relatively cheap:
1. The Polite Notice may work for some people - "Please do not take the Towels.
2. The Warning Notice - "Those Guests that take Towels will be charged $15 and an administration fee of $50 per Towel. The money will be collected by your local bailiff.
3. The Stern Notice - "Those Guests that take the Towels will be prosecuted".
4. The Technology Notice - "All our Towels are fitted with advanced technology that will set alarms off if they leave our Hotel - Be warned".
5. The Threat Notice - "All our Towels are environmentally friendly and get recycled after each visit. The have special impregnated ink that reacts with washing power, so please don't take them home. The hotels accepts not liability to damage to any of your other clothing in your washing machines".
Small modifications of the Towels:
6. Make the towels smaller that the usual bath size, a little too small to be useful at home.
7. Get the Towels printed with large signs "Property of Hotel ...".
8. Put little signs on the Towels "Can be purchased at the Hotel Reception for $1".
9. Chain them to the bathroom and make sure the chain is long enough only for them to dry themselves. Position a sign above the towels, saving "Luxury towels available from reception at $10 deposit".
10. Make the Towels so big, they are almost impossible to put into suitcases.
Slightly larger more costly modifications
11. Place a large wooden box over reception entitled "Towel Detection System", and make sure your Guest see it when leaving.
12. Get the Towels fitted with Shop Anti-theft Labels.
13. Fit a number of Towels with special ink that breaks down and smears everything after 5-6 washes. Make sure you know which Towels they are. Remember to tell the guests of these new Towels are now is use at the Hotel when they check in.
14. There are special chemicals that can uniquely tag items - just mention that some of your Towels have been tagged with Forensic Water.
15. Depending upon how long your towels last. Make sure that when they get old, they start to show "Stolen from Hotel ..." on the design.
16. Make a display case behind reception saying "Hall of Shame - Hotel Guests that have stolen our property". Get some photos and put some assumed names under each photo.
17. Treat your towels will a certain fragrant that can't be smelt by humans, and make sure that the reception dog get an extra big bone when he smells one of your towels in a guests bag. A photo showing one bad guest being caught will be enough.
18. Keep a record of those regular guests that do it and have them met by the local police one day as they leave your hotel.
19. Make the Towel design and colour so dreadful that nobody will take them home.
20. Add a design to the Towels, that represents a curse or instills back luck if taken from the Hotel - Remember to tell the Guest of this local legend and the back luck that befell Guest X.
