He is just de-stressing. He has traveled (in most cases) near 1,000 miles to your tank, and he needs a bit of quiet time. For about two weeks, you don't want to disturb him or touch him. If he is still buried after a couple weeks, you may want to evaluate your care techniques.

They often dig to escape surface conditions. Do you have 80% humidity? Is it 80F degrees in your tank? Does he have friends? Does he have places to hide above ground to make him feel secure?

It's also possible he is molting. Depending on his size, this can take more than a month. The bottom line is not to go digging for him. Just let him be and work on your conditions if they are not ideal.

How do you leave hermit crabs for a trip?

Well at pet stores were they sell hermit crab supplies there should be something called a vacation pack which should have packs of food that will last your hermit crab a certain amount of days usually around 5 days. Then after the days are up you can get a family member to change it for a new one if you are still gone.

Do you mix the hermit crab treat with the hermit crab food?

No. Not usually. You are supposed to have 2 feeding shells. One for treat and one for food. Because when you have the treat in the hermit crab won't eat the food. (Like if you had the choice of cake or spinach.) So you are supposed to put the treat in every day or two days. Hope this helps!

Do saltwater hermit crabs have an exoskeleton?

Absolutely. Marine hermit crabs (saltwater hermit crabs) also, like the land hermit crab, have a soft abdomen that is not protected by a hard exoskeleton, so they scavenge shells from snails as they grow to wear for protection. The marine hermit crab will also shed it's exoskeleton as it grows. This is a very fast process, taking only a few hours to a day compared to the molting process of the land hermit crab, which can take several days to a few months.

What does a hermit crab need in order to have babies?

Unfortunately, hermit crabs will almost never mate in captivity. A few hobbiest have purchased crabs with a clutch of eggs and have tried to hatch them but it is almost impossible to get the eggs to mature and 10 days seems to be the longest that anyone has kept them alive.

Hermit crab not eating?

It depends on how long he's not been eating. When hermit crabs molt, they won't eat or be very active. They will climb into a hiding place and stay there for a couple days.
