Maybe what's making holes in your lawn the size of a silver dollar are bugs or something like that. Just fill them with fresh dirt and put grass seeds in it. If it doesn't work just call someone who is specialised in those kind of things. They could really help you! Squirrels and birds when digging for nuts and worms usually make small holes like that. Or it could be gophers and moles.
My grass has become riddled with weeds and holes, and I do not want to deal with is. Where can I find someone to hire for lawn maintenance?
The bandicoot's snout helps it to find food. Bandicoots are omnivorous, feeding on earthworms, insect larvae and spiders, plant tubers, roots and truffle-like fungi. The snout-shaped holes they leave when digging for their feed are a common sight in many a suburban backyard lawn.
You didn't say if this was happening at night or daytime. If these holes are appearing over night and in the warm weather months, it could be skunks digging grubs. Generally they dig a small hole and pull the dirt out around the hole. You may not always smell the skunk but may notice a residual punky smell in the morning when you investigate the diggings.
Moles and voles can be real burdens to a nice lawn and its maintenance. To prevent them from ruining a good size lawn, there are tips for keeping them at bay. The best is smoke fumigation. Cartridges are used flush out moles. They are difficult, but can be effective.
