For a Right-footer, the Torpedo punt is produced by holding the ball with both hands one each side of the ball but in a semi-staggered position - such that the ball sits between the hands with the left hand positioned mainly at the front half of the ball and the right mostly at the back half of the ball. In this positioning, the ball should be positioned such that it is angled slightly across the body, so that its far end is pointed about 15 degrees to the left of pointing straight ahead [in other words, it is not pointing directly ahead: it is angled a few degrees across the body].
As the player moves forward to kick, he holds the ball over the right foot, and then drops the ball onto the slightly outer side of the top instep of his right foot guiding the ball to the foot with his right hand only. His weight is directed behind the ball and his foot pointed by the time it makes contact with the ball. When the ball is dropped, it is only at a very slight angle to the ground, so that the kick is quite a flat kick at contact, and the leg follow-through is complete. The ball is kicked so that it spirals through the air like the spiralling of a bullet. With practice, it will cover great distances.
you can kick a basketball but the deffinition punt is impossible
kick, punt, drop-kick
It depends, if you want to punt or kick. if you want to punt you put it in your hands, then kick it. if you want to kick it you set it on the floor and get your foot and hit the ball with your foot, that means you kick it.

A punt is basically a kick but you use the tip of your toes. Punting is rarely recommended.
Only recently (April 23rd) I traced the following advertisement. STAB PUNT The Inventor of the Stab Punt (1949) is Interested in hearing from anyone who used this Kick pre 1970 Ph. 8743622, that I placed in the Age, page 26, bottom right corner, on Thursday the 26th of July, 1990. This ad appeared on he Sports Page that had an article by David Parkin on the Torpedo Punt. This was one of several weekly articles on ball disposals in Australian Rules Football. So we have an article describing how to kick the football and an ad by someone who invented a kick in Australian Rules Football on the same page. Stab Punt Jim
If you kick the ball properly, not painful at all.
