I have one. Pain in the ass. Pump kickstart until it hits a hard unmovable spot. Press the decompression. Pull out choke & make sure gas supply is open. Make sure it's in neutral. Make sure killswitch is out. Now jump up and kick! You need to stand on footpegs, get momentum and really kick! I find every spring I have to clean out carb, and adjust everything just perfect... I'm thinking this bike might have past it's usefulness. Harder to operate than to enjoy. Next bike will have electric ignition. There is a specific technique unique to the Suzuki DR 500 & 600 kickstart procedure, obviously switch on the ignition and pull out fully the choke knob on the carb if stone cold. Ease the engine round slowly with the kick start whilst holding the decompressor lever. Eventually the lever will click back towards you and it will lock in this postion. Let go of the lever and again ease the kickstart round further bit by bit (slowly) till the little lever clicks forward on it's own goes with a "clack". The piston is now at top dead centre and a quick boot on the kickstart should do nicely, I had one for years and it rarely failed to start this was how it was designed ! DO NOT TOUCH THE THROTTLE during this procedure you'll just flood the engine with unwanted fuel and "flood it" causing poor starting and frustration just follow this technique with a hot or cold engine. Mine starts with ease... from cold:- full choke, hold the comp lever down and pump the kick start a few times to prime the cylinder, then as above:- slowly kick until you feel it stiffen up on the compression stroke, pull the decomp lever in , it should click on then press the kick start until the decomp lever clicks back out.. release the kick start to the top of its stroke, then a swift firm kick.. fires first time :-) warm as above but omit the choke and the priming bit
The Suzuki DR650 was introduced in 1990. It was replaced by the DR600. The motorcycle has 46 horsepower and a single cylinder. In 1996, the DR650SE was introduced.

It means it's a kickstart if its all alone, such as an electric has an ER ending... the E for electrical. Other than that I believe it's just a model letter. Anyways just an R = kickstart, ER = electric start.
Well maksure there's fuel and that it is on, then you just kick it over using the kickstart on the right hand side of the bike
