This might seem like a silly question but the fire salamander was once considered to be an extremly powerful magical creature. It is believed that the myth started when somebody threw a damp rotten log on a campfire and were surprised to find that it extinguished the fire. The reason for this probably has more to do with the water content of the log but (won't ya know) right about then out crawls the humble fire salamander and snatches up all the credit. Alexander the great once lost a bunch of horse due to bad drinking water - in which was discovered a fire salamander. Consequently there are recorded in books of alcamy elaborate methods on how to safely kill one of these creatures.
