Hey there. As a person that has been in a situation of almost all kinds of viruses due to lack of good administration in labs i had to "clean up"; i would suggest that you just get a good antivirus and keep it upto date, my advice is something like nod32 or kaspersky. Bare in mind that you should never install two antivirus on the same computer due to the conflict.

Oh and another thing, im almost sure that if you try to enter your registry, its going to say that registry editing has been disabled by the admin, or something like that. If it is the case then click start click run and paste the line bellow in, and then press enter

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableRegistryTools /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

One more thing to note is that this virus that you speak of, i think it also takes away your folder options, if i can remember correctly. For this little problem i suggest a small tool called Remove Restriction Tool, you may find it on www.sergiwa.com, you can find other handy little tools there.
