Permethrin kills webworms. But it's important to know the kind of webworm. Specifically, different webworms require different treatment date. An example of treatment schedules follows:

1. Cotoneaster webworm [Athrips rancidella] needs to be treated when the larvae first appear.

2. Fall webworm [Hyphantria cunea] needs to be treated in late June-early July, and then again in August-early September.

3. Juniper webworm [Daebomeris marginella] needs to be treated in late July-August. Spring treatments also may be needed in the case of heavy infestations and overwintering survivors.

4. Mimosa webworm [Homadaula anisocetra] needs to be treated every four or five days until populations are under control.

5. Pine webworm [Pococer robustella (Zeller)] needs to be treated in early June.

Will webworms kill a tree?

No, webworms generally do not kill trees but yes, they can contribute to a tree's decline and ultimate death.Specifically, webworms cover trees with webs. Inside the webs, the worms eat the leaves. Trees weaken after several years if they yearly lose more than one-third of their foliage to webworms. But they will survive as long as the leaf-consumption is not coupled with other environmental stresses such as additional pests, extreme moisture and temperature levels, or heavy chemical controls.

Yes, vinegar kills ground-dwelling larvae known as sod webworms even though no, it does not do so for tree-dwelling webworms known as tent caterpillars. Sod webworms also may be controlled by such home remedies as insecticidal soaps and soapy water. Organic and non-organic insecticides generally require two or three applications in order to make sure that eggs and hatchlings are eliminated.

How do you get rid of web worms?

Die Webworms! While unsghtly, webworms will not destroy an established tree. Saplings, however, may end up a loss. One way to get rid of web worms is to pierce the web with a long pole (preferably with two nails driven perpendicular to each other at the end of the pole, creating a 'T') and begin twirling the stick. The silken nest will attach itself to the probe and as you twist the pole, like a drill bit, the nest will wrap itself into a nice bundle. You then have the choice of burning the nest and the caterpillars inside (if permissible in your jurisdiction) or plunging and removing the nest in a bucket of soapy water or stomping on the nest - eh, yuk- to pulverize the critters inside. Another way, on lower limbs, shrubs, etc. is to use Bt, a bacteria, to kill the caterpillars; they won't die from the spray. They die from eating leaves with the spray on them. You may have to repeat bi-monthly; this is best done in the spring of the year. Be careful and selective with Bt because it can kill butterflies and other beneficials, as well. Finally, if you use a pole or a jet blast of water, you can tear open the webs and the wasps and birds will have a field day with their newly accesible buffet!

What are cobwebs made of?

Nothing makes black cobwebs. If you have what appear to be black cobwebs, it is because you may have an oil burning furnace that has a leak in it. The soot leaks into the room and gathers around dust making it look like a cobweb.
