There are books that show the grain patterns of different woods. If you can match the grain pattern of the wood you're looking at to a wood in the book, you can figure out what you have. The relative softness of the wood isn't a way to tell; some hardwoods are softer than some softwoods. Example: radiata pine and poplar. Poplar's softer than radiata pine, but radiata pine is a "softwood" because it comes from a needle-leaf tree.

Which takes longer to renew hardwood or softwood?

Is the baobab tree hard or soft wood?

It is a hardwood. I have long understood it to be as simple as, if the tree never loses it's needles/leaves (is an evergreen), it is a softwood. Even Balsa is a hardwood. If the leaves drop each year due to cold, it is a hardwood. However, I don't know if trees in tropical climates ever lose their leaves. So I learned that hardwoods surround their seed with some sort of covering (such as chestnut, walnut and apple trees) whereas evergreens (softwoods) let their seeds drop to the ground.

How can you tell the difference between hardwood and softwood when the tree is growing?

The difference between softwood and hardwood can often be difficult to tell. A common misconception is that a softwood is soft and hardwood is hard. This is not the case. For examply, Balsa wood can be extremely soft yet is a hardwood. The actual difference is that the softwood comes from trees with thin leaves like pine needles and generally grow far quicker than most hardwoods. Hardwoods have broader leaves for example Oak and generally grow slower. To distinguish between the two you need to know a little about wood as there is no set rule. Generally speaking, softwoods will have a wider grain pattern due to faster growth and hardwoods will have quite a close grain patter because of the slower growth. This is similar to the size or crystals. The faster the growth, the bigger the cristals. The actual hardness or density of the wood has little to do with the classification. - Generally if a tree is an angiosperm (bearing broad leaves and flowers) , then it's a hardwood.

What are the differences between softwood and hardwood?

== == == == Softwood is the wood of coniferous trees, such as pine and spruce, where as hardwood comes from decidious trees such as oaks and maples. Paper made from softwood contains longer fibers, and is much stronger and rougher than paper made from hardwood trees. For this reason, it is used for making materials that need to be very strong and durable, such as shipping containers. Hardwood paper, on the other hand, has shorter fibers and therefore is smoother. It is used for making materials that are good to write on.

What is the fast growing tree and how fast does it grow?

Most of the fastest growing trees are softwood. They are able to expand faster then hardwood trees. Silver maples are the fastest growing trees that I know of in Minnesota. They grow roughly 3-4 feet a year. Growing heights may vary in different areas of the world.
