The best sign is if - the temperature gauge goes into the overheated area and the fan doesn't come on. However, that may be a sign of MORE than just a bad heat sensor. The entire electrical circuit for the cooling fan will have to be looked at (i.e: fuse - heat sensor - fan relay - fan motor - has a wire or connector come loose). Any one (or more than one) could have failed. Hondas are notoriously reliable but, let's face it, the vehicle 12 years old.
