A diet pill works if you get results somewhat close to what has been advertised. Of course the advertisers are anoyying, cheating, con artists who sleep wiht their sisters and chose the best cases and write at the bottom in tiny light gray print "results not typical on a white background.

Why is a control group needed in any experiment?

A control group creates a 'yard-stick' to measure any changes in the experiment. For example, suppose you're testing a new diet pill on 100 people - you'd only give the pill to half the group, leaving the other half as a 'control' to see if the diet pill actually works.

Will a baby be born with a birth defect if you are taking a diet pill and do not know if you are pregnant?

I know of no birth defects associated with diet pill use, but know two things: 1) As soon as you discover you are pregnant, you should stop taking all over-the-counter medicines until you first talk with your doctor and get his okay. 2) No one who is pregnant should be taking diet pills, so don't continue.
