They are pregnant for 63 days so by the third week you should be able to tell especially if they are small dogs or not an overweight dog. Usually by 4 weeks along she will start to show and you can see it around her abdominal area. Your dog might not be as able to jump.

Signs of Pregnancy Dogs give signs, shortly after breeding to let you know that they are pregnant. Yours will too. 1. Her vulva will stay slightly swollen after their heat ends. 2. Her teats ( nipples will be more pronounced and hard. 3. You will notice a big change in her temperament. She may get quieter or lazy or more loving 4. 2 weeks after breeding they may experience morning sickness. It can last a week or so. Give her saltine crackers before she gets out of bed and a few throughout the day By now I know they are pregnant. Your vet has to wait until day 28-32 of her pregnancy, to palpate the abdomen. To do this lay your dog on her side, slide one palm beneath her and your other palm over her other side, just below her ribs. Gently squeeze your palms together and feel for little Golf balls, these are puppies. If you become good at this, you will be able to count the puppies. 5. In the 4th week you may notice thickening of her sides, between her ribs and hip bone. 6. She may start to show any time after 5 weeks. Larger breeds may carry the pups up in her rib cage so it might not be so easy to notice. 7. Most dogs show at 6-7 weeks. You may notice a normal discharge somewhere in the last couple of weeks. The discharge is clear and has the consistency of thick vaseline and is odorless. If you notice a discharge that is green or bloody and foul smelling seek a vet. 8. In the 8th week you can feel the puppies kick and turn around.

Some ways of telling if your dog is pregnant include: if your dog's vulva is swollen, if you can squeeze the nipples and milk comes out, if she digs holes for her puppies, if she goes into hiding weeks before her puppies, gets depressed, or treats her stuffed animals like her young.

The gestation period is usually around 60 days, during which you may see a few obvious signs in your dog:

~Weight gain - abdomen increases in size

~Loss of appetite (not always)

~Teats become more prominent (about a month after mating)

~Vaginal discharge (month after mating)

~Behavioral changes

It's best if you speak to your Veterinarian who will be able to determine if your dog is pregnant or not and will also be able to offer you advice through the duration of your dog's pregnancy. A visit to the vet may prove useful as they can determine how many puppies there are by using either a stethoscope or a simple ultrasound examination.

Until late pregnancy, it can be difficult to see any outer changes in your dog. If you suspect your dog may have become pregnant, you can schedule a visit with your veterinarian for an abdominal ultrasound to see if fetuses can be visualized in the uterus.

You will know about this if your dog's legs move slowly when it walks, its tummy stretches down when it stands up and it would lie down a lot more than usual.

Let's start with the canine heat cycle. The canine heat or estrous cycle varies in length. Many people know that their dog goes into "heat" but don't realize that unlike the human menstrual cycle, which is a non-fertile stage, dogs that are in heat are preparing to ovulate. There are four stages of the estrous cycle. The first stage is proestrus, which is characterized by increased follicular activity of the ovary, a stage that is necessary prior to the release of the eggs. Outward signs include vulvar swelling and bleeding. During this time, your dog will be attractive to males but not receptive to them. In general, this stage lasts six to 11 days with an average of nine days. The end of this cycle is noted when your pet becomes receptive to the male and will stand to be bred. The second phase is the actual fertile phase or estrus. During this time, the discharge becomes more straw-colored to light pink and the vulva, although still swollen, is softer. The female is now receptive to males and will stand for breeding. This stage generally lasts five to nine days. Unfortunately, it can last as long as 20 days and still be normal. Each dog is different and must be monitored closely. The end of this stage is characterized by the female no longer accepting the male. The last two stages of the estrous cycle are diestrus, a non-receptive time when the corpora lutea, which produce progesterone, are active on the ovary and anestrus. During anestrus there is no ovarian activity. Diestrus and anestrus are lengthy periods: diestrus lasts 56 to 60 days and anestrus is variable, but several months long. Most dogs cycle twice a year. The next step in the course of the pregnancy is the actual conception…well, I hope you know how that works, so I'll skip that part. It takes about 62 days from the day that your dog is bred for the puppies to be born.

That is the question of the ages :-). Some females will show earlier than others. Normally the very first sign is little bit of swelling in the vulva area. If you want to know for sure in the earlier stages, then you can have an ultrasound done on your girl at around 4 weeks along. You can also have her x-rayed but you would have to wait until around 58 days along and you probably would know by then. Gestation period is normally around 58-63 days but that can vary too. You normally start to see her mammary glands swelling up at around 5 weeks. In some females you will see nothing, ha! So if you think she is pregnant or you need to know, ultrasound her at 4 weeks. Vets will sometimes palpate the dog, but I have had that done too many times with the Vet saying, no she is not pregnant, and then at around 63 days, wha la, here comes puppies, that is why I have an ultrasound done on them. But I have a large breed that is hard to detect pups by palpating them. In a smaller breed the Vet should be able to feel pups but you still need to wait until around 4 weeks along.

The very first sign of pregnancy is the little nipples of the bitch will stay enlarged after breeding, keeping a pinkish color. The newly pregnant female will sleep a lot and may have a loss in appetite. The dog does not start to "show" until at least five weeks, then she will look a little fatter in the mid-section. At six weeks she will be more obviously pregnant, and by the ninth week she will be ready to give birth.
well if you had mated your dog you would have to do a ultrasound every once a week and how you tell if your dog is pregnat she would probaly be fat but... put your hand on her stmach and feel if you can feel tiny bodies moving

That depends on what you mean by 'bloated'. A lot of small puppies get very big bellies from intestinal parasites. 'Bloat' as a medical term is a condition that is most common in large breed dogs in which the stomach twists on itself and fills with gas. This is very rare in small puppies, but the symptoms include a distended belly(to the point where it is hard to the touch), and nonproductive, continuous retching. The only real way to telll for sure is to take your puppy to see a vet.

The way that you can tell if your dog has internal bleeding, is if it is vomiting a substance that is very black, or her fecal matter is a tar looking black. This means that blood is going somewhere into the body where it doesn't belong, and it is mixing in with fluids in the animals body that turns in black.

Your dog will first show signs of discomfort, whining, getting up and down, become very weak, gum color turns pale & the stomach will slowly (or sometimes very fast) show signs of distention (bloating). You need to get your dog to your Veterinarian as fast as possible as bloat can cause death if the intestines start to twist, called torsion. This is extremely painful for the dog. Immediate surgery is needed.

It may be a twisted stomach ("bloat") or something else: all of which need an immediate visit to the vet ASAP.

When a dog has a healthy weight, you can feel his ribs easily. (Not SEE his ribs, FEEL his ribs. If you can see his ribs he's underweight.) If not, of course, he's overweight.
