How do you know if cat has ticks?

A tick looks like a grain of rice enlarged about five times, depending on how much blood it has engorged. If it is also just about impossible to pull off, then it's probably a tick. If you live in an area where ticks carry Lyme's disease, you should have your pets or yourself checked out at a medical clinic.

check them out! i have been pulling ticks off cats for yrs! flush the ticks or burn them!

First make sure you know what a tick can look like, empty or full. You have to get down to your cats skin, through all the hair and undercoat. I would take my cat to the vet to be checked, although you can check this at home by using a flea comb. Flea and tick droppings look like tiny black flecks on the cat's skin, and sometimes can be found inside the ears.

If you do find a tick do not pull it out. Use the flea comb to drag it out of the cat's fur and place it on a wet cloth so it cannot escape. Fleas and ticks can usually be found along the cat's back, from the nape of the head to the base of the tail where the cat finds it difficult to groom.

If you find a flea or tick, take the cat to the vet. Monthly flea treatment is advised for both the cat and the house. For every adult flea you find on your cat, there are hundred more eggs and larvae within the house hiding in carpets, bedding, other fabric and in cracks. These can lie dormant for many months and are too small to be seen with the naked eye, so vigorous cleaning and vacuuming (place a flea collar in the vacuum bag to kill off any fleas picked up) of the house is a must.
