If you dip your finger into it, the gas will evaporate quite quickly, whereas the diesel won't. Also, they smell quite different, but then you'd need to know what they smelled like in the first place. Also, gas will burn easily if you tip a little out and set a match to it (careful - could be dangerous) whereas diesel is very difficult to light if you don't make a wick.
