Megger test

There is a device that is used specifically for testing the insulation of a wire, it is called a megohm meter or megger for short. On the whole megger testing is non destructive. What happens is a DC voltage is applied to the device or winding under test. It is an insulation test to see is the insulation has been injured in any way to cause a short circuit when normal power is applied to it. On my megger there are 3 ranges 300V, 750V, and 1000 volts. Applying the proper voltage is essential to not damaging the device you are testing. Working voltages up to 240 volts should use the 300 range. Working voltages up to 600 volts use the 750 volt range and working voltages above 600 use the 1000 volt range. As you can see if you used the 1000 volt range on a device that had a working voltage of say 24 volts you could damage the insulation just by testing it. So meggering a device is non destructive if you use the tester as its instructions tell you to.

Can 8 gauge wire be used on a 15 amp breaker?

Yes. Check to see if the wire rating printed on the outside covering of the wire in question. Most 12AWG wire is rated for 20 amps. Wire insulation is rated 300, 600 and 1000 volts. In case you are having trouble with the math for calculating amps x volts (120, 240V etc) = watts, watts divided by volts = amps Code will let you load up a conductor up to 80%. Full load on a # 12 wire is 16 amps. 12 Gauge copper can be used for 20A or less

How does a transistor tester work?

very unreliably it can only tell if it is good but not how good and will tell you if bad but not how bad. it is only good for pass no pass testing.

Why does my outdoor power outlet not work?

There are several possible causes for an electric outlet not working:The outlet has gone bad such as internal contacts corroded or bent so they don't make a connection. The wire on the outlet is not connect or loose, not connected properlyThere is a break in the wire somewhereNo power going to the outlet from the source, which could also be caused by a bad fuse

What good and bad things about the invention of electricity?

the good thing: you can use a lot of stuff with electricity The bad thing: You waste money and the earth will be destroyed if we use too much

How do you fix an electric baseboard heater?

first of all you buy a double pole unit thermostat which should come with the mounting plate and thermostat and it should have 4 wires 2 red 2 black okay now you join the red to the red power wire and black to the black power wire and the 2 remaining wires which should be a red and black can be joined to the red and black wires on your heater .....now you should be good to go ............LEE48

Why does an engine miss?

A plug not firing for some reason. this may be do to bad wires, insulation cracks cause spark to jump from wire to wire, or wire to ground.

What could be the possible problems for why your 1998 Kia sportage will not crank?

Weak battery, bad connection at the battery, clean and tighten the connections. If they have corroded, they may be bad inside of the insulation on the wire. Ground on motor bad. Bad key switch. Bad neutral safety switch, try starting in neutral. Bad starter. You can try engaging it by hand with a screwdriver or piece of wire if you know how to. I would do that first to make sure the starter was good and the battery charged.

The fuse is good so why would my 1993 Chevrolet's clock and radio suddenly not work?

Could be a disconnected wire, bad ground, a break in the wire (inside the insulation). Are they one and the same (a radio with a clock on it)? Could be the component died (bad transistor, diode, faulty soldering, etc).

What happens to a wire if the current capacity is exceeded?

The wire overheats. In a bad case, a fire can be started. Note that, sometimes, current capacity is actually more a factor of insulation capacity rather than wire size.

How can you know that power cable need to be replaced?

you check the insulation and it is degraded, hole in it or it does not have a very high ohms of resistance, which means the insulation is bad.

What causes insulation breakdown in transformers?

The main cause of insulation breakdown is excessive temperature. However, it can also be caused by excessively-high electrical stress due to sharp corners or other protrusions in the conductor which act to intensify the electric field beyond the capability of the insulation.

Are bad conductors of electricity used to cover electrical wires?

No, materials with a high insulation value factor are used to cover electrical wire to provide a barrier from the wire shorting out to ground. By using the term "bad conductors" states that there is conductivity to a degree.

What is the likely cause of a blown starter relay fuse when key is in the on position in a 1999 Chrysler LHS?

Fuses usually blow when something is wrong. You may have a wire with the insulation worn off. You may have a bad relay. You may have a bad starter motor. Start at the point of the fuse and follow the wire. Look for the bad spot.
