The best way of course is with an MRI,but at around $800...it's not done initially unless you are a pro football player I guess.
The mechanism of injury ..how you hurt it is important. how old you are >45 y.o have more tears than 20 y.o.
Stretch your arms out to your side with thumbs pointing down, and bring your arms in about 30 degrees, now have someone push down on your wrist, and you try and resist..if you have pain and or weakness you could have a tear. Also if you are having limited range of motion of your shoulder.
You can try ice advil etc..for a few wks .if not better go see a doctor.

What is a torn rotator cuff?

The rotator cuff is a group of tendons and their related muscles
that helps keep the upper arm bone securely placed, or seated, into
the socket of the shoulder blade. Rotator cuff disorders are
usually caused by a combination of factors, such as normal wear and
tear. Age-related degeneration slowly damages the rotator cuff,
causing one or more tendons to rub against the bones (impingement).
Partial or complete tears to the rotator cuff tendon are more
likely to occur when the rotator cuff is already scarred, weakened,
or damaged. A complete rotator cuff tear in a person with an
otherwise healthy shoulder is most often caused by an extremely
forceful injury.
