If you have Windows XP, there are two methods to determine whether you are running a 32-bit or a 64-bit version. If one does not work, try the other.

Method 1: View System Properties in Control Panel 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. Type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK. 3. Click the General tab. The operating system appears as follows: • For a 64-bit version operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Version < Year> appears under System. • For a 32-bit version operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version appears under System. Note is a placeholder for a year. Method 2: View System Information window 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. Type winmsd.exe, and then click OK. 3. When System Summary is selected in the navigation pane, locate Processor under Item in the details pane. Note the value. • If the value that corresponds to Processorstarts with x86, the computer is running a 32-bit version of the Windows operating system. • If the value that corresponds to Processor starts with ia64 or AMD64, the computer is running a 64-bit version of the Windows operating system.

If you don't know, you almost certainly have the 32-bit version of Windows XP. The 64-bit version is pretty rare. You can see the version you have by right-clicking My Computer on your desktop or in the Start Menu and selecting properties.

Note that the version of Windows XP you have is not relevant to Windows 8. 32-bit operating systems can run on both 32-bit and 64-bit processors, so having the 32-bit version of Windows XP does not mean that you can't run the 64-bit version of Windows 8.

The fact that you have to ask is an indication that you have the 32-bit version. The 64-bit version had to be specially requested; it wasn't found on the average off-the-shelf computer.

No you can't because 64-bit won't run on an x86 (32-bit) PC. You have to have the x86 version.

Steps needed to upgrade Windows to support 64-bit processing?

To use 64-bit specific applications, you must purchase both a 64-bit processor and a 64-bit version of Windows. 64-bit applications will not run on 32-bit versions of Windows, even if a 64-bit capable processor is installed. You also cannot install a 64-bit version of Windows on a 32-bit only processor.

How do you change Windows XP 64 bit to Windows XP 32 bit?

If you are currently running a 32-bit version of Windows, you can only perform an upgrade to another 32-bit version of Windows. Similarly, if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows Vista, you can only perform an upgrade to another 64-bit version of Windows Vista. If you want to move from a 32-bit version of Windows to a 64-bit version of Windows Vista, you'll need to back up your files and then perform a custom installation of the 64-bit version of Windows 8. Is windows xp professional always in 64 bit?

Windows XP is almost NEVER in "64 bit". You have to specifically purchase XP 64 bit, as opposed to regular XP which is 32 bit. 64 bit processors will run 32 bit XP without problems, but you'll get a little more performance and some extra features (GUID partitions) on 64 bit windows. Once again - it's "always" in 32 bit, unless you go buy 64 bit.
