I recommend getting a cheap multimeter. With the car running put the leads on the battery terminals ( with the meter set on 20 DC volts) and check the voltage. If you have 14-16 volts your alternator is working. If you have 12 or less volts your alternator is not working. This procedure requires you to have the car running so you might need a boost to try it.
Also check the voltage at the battery with the engine not running. You should read 12.6 volts on a fully charged battery. 12.4 and it is 75% charged. 12.2 volts and it is 50%. 12.0 volts and it is 25% charged. If you find the battery is too low, then put it on a charger and see if it will take a charge. If it will not, the battery is defective.
