Raise the wheel off the ground and give it a spin. It should freewheel for a quite few seconds before slowing down gradually. if it comes to a sudden stop, something is wrong.
Or remove the wheel from the frame/fork, and twirl the axle with your fingers. It should turn smoothly, but not be able to move sideways or up/down.
Rear wheels with internal gears are allowed to have a little bit of sideways flop.
Do note that if you want to adjust your bearings you will most likely need a set of special tools called cone wrenches, and to understand how a locknut works.
