Generally only one coil will fail at a time. You will notice a distinct miss and rough engine running bath at idle and at speed. The check engine light will come on and a diagnostic tool will bring back the "engine miss" code. Buy a new coil and change out the coils until the miss goes away. If you do not have a diagnostic tool to turn off the check engine light it will turn off after a few driving cycles.
