It is all to do with the magnetism or the rock, because if you know about the curie point then it is all clear because when the liquid basalt comes up into the ocean, it takes time to become solid, and when it becomes solid, all of the magnetic particles have pointed in the correct position to the current position of the poles. This means that scientists know where the plea were at at a particular point in time and the rock matches up to replicate this, thus then being able to tell when that particular rock was created. hope this helps
cause we have been there?

No offense but this question is a little bit dumb... there is only one "MID OCEAN RIDGE" there are ridges all over the oceans but the MID OCEAN RIDGE is a super huge long one that practically covers from the north to the south. between North America, South America and Europe and Africa, there in the middle of the Atlantic ocean is a long narrow "mountain rang" type of thing (long and narrow like a snake going vertically) that is actually the mid ocean ridge. As the lava flow from the opening, more keeps piling up and cooling. So it keeps and keeps on growing. As far as I know, no parts of the ridge show above water. Its extremely deep in the ocean.
i never know
