== == A gelding is a male horse that has been castrated. Sometimes this is done by removing the testicles, and sometimes by crushing the spermatic cord which leaves the testicles present but causes them to shrivel up and shrink. To check to see if a horse is a stallion or gelding you have to look at the horse's genital area. If you see proper testicles it is a stallion. Many stallions can be aggressive, so if you don't know if he has been gelded, do not approach the horse. It's often easier to see if you are standing behind the horse as he swishes his tail, but standing behind any horse, especially a stallion, is not a good idea. It's probably best to observe from the side, it's pretty obvious. If the testicles are absent or very small, he is a gelding. also stallions are usally more "built" or have more or better muscle tone than most geldings.Stallions also prance around with their necks arched like natural dressage movement when they see another horse and sqeal really loudly when they come in contact with another horse eg sniffing each other ect.. and strike out with one or both front legs but unlike a mare they usually have a lower toned sqeal almost like a strange groan. Geldings are much more calmer than stallions, and don't hang around mares so much. But stallions,oh they chase mares everywhere they go. They are wild and free. And their eyes are NOT ever drowsy, a gelding has very narrow, calm eyes. Well, a stallion has balls and a gelding doesn't. Stallions are not always wild and free. It depends on how the horse was raised. A stallion can sometimes be calmer than a mare or gelding. The only sure way to tell is the obvious way:)

Watch it's movements, body shape, behaviour, temperment, colour. For example a pinto is usually a American Paint Horse, but if you look closely at some Pintos you will find they are a Medicine Hat Horse, one of the Indians favourites. Or a Cleveland bay, although this breed is always bay, a lot of horses are bay, so you have to look at the face, then sometimes the gleam of the coat can help, take the Akhal-teke for example, if being feed right, there coat has a natural shine/glow to it, it's all about studying the horse.

Some breeds are very easy to tell what they are. Like the Fjord with the short spikey mane, dun body and dorsel stripe. But some are not so easy. My best advice to you is to read a few horse breed books to be able to spot the key charactoristics of the breed. It is mainly just practice. :) Have fun

you basically have to wait towards the end of their pregnancy. you got to know how long it takes from when the horse was impregnated to the average amount of months until it gives birth. If it is a female, the horse will give birth one month before then if it would be a male.

Mares don't have a sheath where the penis is housed between the hind legs; instead they have an udder with two nipples. They also have a vulva (a long slit) underneath the "dock" or their tail and below the anus. Males do not have this slit; they just have their anus under their tail.

Stallions will have a pair of testes housed in a scrotum behind this sheath that don't hang down as far as a man's or a bull's. Geldings do not have testes because they've been surgically removed; they still retain their penis though.

You can determine the gender of a horse at the moment of birth by simply lifting the tail. If there is one opening (the anus), it is a boy. If there are two openings (the anus and the vulva), it is a girl.

It's not difficult. Look under the horse between his back legs, If he is intact you will easily see the testicles. If he has been gelded you won't see testicles.
