Squeezing gently in the palm of the hand to test for softness, if the fruit feels hard , it probably isn't ripe yet, if it feels squishy it may be over ripe, anything in between is a matter of taste. If you aren't sure , try 3 different hardness's, and decide which one you like. For hard unripe fruit, place in a paper bag in a warm spot for a day or two , checking twice a day, most fruit will ripen this way, and it's a good idea to buy fruit in different stages if you plan to use it over a long period like a week.
