Well, there is a little question mark next to the Minor Edit Check Box that explains its purpose and how to use it. If you are not adding content but fixing grammar, you would check that box. Otherwise, you would leave it unchecked as i do when adding content to questions such as these or when I am writing answers to unanswered questions.
Click on either 'Edit answer' on the blue side menu or the 'Improve Answer' button underneath the question. Make your minor adjustments then click on the 'Mark this as a minor edit' box to the right of the answer before you 'Save' the change.
There are a number of things on WikiAnswers that can be edited.Editing Answers:Click wither orange "Improve" links in the answer area, or the "Improve answer" in the blue menu area to the left. Make your changes. If minor edits such as punctuation or spelling corrections are made, do not click the minor changes check box on the right of the editing page. If adding to or making dramatic changes to existing answers, click to remove the check mark from the minor changes box.Editing Questions:If the question has not been answered, any member may edit the question. This is in fact encouraged in the case of typos, text-speak, or the use of numbers instead of words or other deviations from WikiAnswers Style Rules. Simply click the check mark at the end of the unanswered question. If the question is answered, only supervisors may edit the question. Regular members would need to flag the question, or to notify a supervisor directly by message or email.

The reason an answer might be incorrect is because this is a "Wiki". That means anyone can come and edit it. If you see something 100% incorrect use the flag tool to mark the questions for review.
tick the box beside>>>Mark this as a minor edit. Check this if you're improving the spelling, grammar, or format, rather than adding content. ___WikiName____ will be included in the page history but not be listed as the last person to modify the answer.
First, you don't want to get rid of the 'Edit Alternates' button on WikiAnswers. However, if you are asking how to get rid of the alternates of a questions that do not belong, simply click the check mark box (once you clicked the 'Edit Alternates' link) for all alternate wordings that do not apply to the main question, then go up to the top and select 'Split'. Do not remove any alternate wordings that are a reworded form of the main question or are basically asking the same thing as the question.
The other user gets credit for it because a minor edit means that you only made a small change, like changing the spelling or grammar of the answer. If information is added to the answer, then it shouldn't be considered a minor edit.
