If you have had the fish for over 1 year to 18 months there is a good chance the fish is getting very old and reaching the end of its natural life span. Use your powers of observation and memory to see if the fish is behaving normally or abnormally. If it is not behaving normally then use a mirror to see if the fish will show off to its' own reflection. If the fish fails to display (show off), there is a good chance the fish has lost interest in life and will die fairly soon. A good large water change can work wonders and revitalise a fish too.
The certain way to tell if any fish is dead is when the movement of the gills stops. If I see a fish that is floating, unable to move or in convulsions but the gills are still moving I put it down because I believe that fish do suffer when they are dying. I leave the fish in the euthanasia solution for 20 minutes after gill movement stops, and if a fish dies of natural causes I leave it in the water for 20 minutes. This makes sure it is dead - if you take a fish out of the water too soon it may recover and then slowly suffocate, which is cruel.
A dying fish could show any number of signs. Some of the most common could be loss of color, loss of appetite, lethargy, etc. If any readily apparent signs of issues are present with your fish, your LFS should be able to interpret these symptoms and recommend a course of treatment that could possibly save the fish. Do not remove the fish from the tank for transport to show the LFS cause that will stress the fish and would further increase any distress the fish has possibly ending in death.
Personally whenever I see a dying betta is when they usually lose their appetite and start to swim a lot less you can even physically see them kind of starting to lose balance when they swim too but that could just be my bettas
They will swim to the top, and dive back down towards the bottom. They may also shake. Mine is in the process of dying right now. Sorry if yours is too.

Hi. You can get to know your betta by examining what they do and how they react to things.
