It will puff up around the gills and with its fins. It may swim around rapidly, if it's scared or upset. Avoid placing mirrors in or around the tank. Don't put more than one beta fish in one tank. Some species of fish are okay with bettas, but you should research more about proper types, and proper betta care.
Another thing: bettas are tropical fish, and need to be kept in heated tanks, in no less than 5 gallons of water. Warm water holds less oxygen, so the tank should be circulated with bubble jets at the least. Live plants will also help with oxygen.
Most pet stores will tell you that bettas are calm and do fine in bowls or vases with plants. That is not true: Bettas need warm water (about 75 to 80 degrees) and once you have your betta in proper living conditions, you will see that they are very curious and lively fish. They are one of my favorite types of fish to own.

∙ 14y agoBettas are not human and do not get angry. The nearest they can get to anger I guess is if another male Betta is in their vicinity. They insinctively will fight until one fish escapes (is removed) or one fish dies.

∙ 13y agoFirst, the betta must be presented with an unpleasant stimulus which often comes in the form of another male. NEVER house male bettas together. They will fight to the death. If a mirror is presented into their environment they will become more active and flare their fins. That is when they are "mad". It is actually healthy for the erectile tissue in the fins to be exercised periodically. This is done by placing a betta mirror in or near the tank or bowl to stimulate the fish. Only leave it there for a couple minutes a couple times a week. Otherwise you will cause the fish great stress!
