The temperature gage will show an increase in water temp, the temp warning light and or a warning audio signal will sound. Water in the form of steam will emit from the engine/hood. Some have oil temp readings and it will also show an increase in temp. Extreme overheating will cause the engine to work improperly even to catastrophic failure.
