Signs of infection are usually redness, swelling, irritation or pain, that lasts longer than a few days. Some minor irritations such as swelling and a longer healing time can sometimes be cleared up quickly by switching from body jewelry made of stainless steel, to body jewelry made from titanium or 14K gold. Any discharge that becomes noticeably thicker and is yellow or green in color, red streaks from the piercing site and a fever, along with body aches are signs of a more serious infection and should be checked by a doctor. If you have any doubt about how serious a problem is with your piercing, please consult a reputable piercing professional or doctor immediately.

Signs of an infected piercing

Redness, discharge of green puss, swelling, tenderness and possible warm to the touch. The quickest way to resolve an infected piercing is to irrigate the piercing under warm running water while moving the jewellery back and forth through the piercing allowing the water to rinse the jewellery off. If you are using after care products to clean your piercing cease using all of them (this way we can find out if the aftercare product is causing the problem). Irrigating the piercing twice a day under warm water while moving the jewellery will rinse the puss and other matter out of the piercing. Once you have completed the rinsing, dry the piercing with clean tissue and leave it alone, don't apply anything else to the piercing. This should resolve and infected piercing within 24 to 48 hours.

Clean it at least 3 times a day with the solution they give you. Also H2Ocean is a great product you can use that works wonders! You can buy it at almost any tattoo or piercing shop, or at Spencers and Hot Topic. If that doesn't work then I suggest going to a doctor and getting a prescription for it. Don't take it out while it's infected though, because it could close with the infection still inside and that would lead to even bigger problems.

· Sea Salt solution

· Non alcoholic mouth wash ( for oral piercings)

CLEANING INSTUCTIONS

1. Squirt on q-tip and clean 3 times a day

2. Mix ¼ tsp. sea salt with 8 oz. of hot water and soak piercing for 3 to 5 min daily.

3. Rinse mouth with non alcoholic mouth wash 3 times a day (for oral piercings)

DON'TS …

· Don't listen to your friends.

· Don't change jewelry prematurely.

· Don't listen to other piercers.

· Don't touch your piercing.

· Don't use alcohol.

· Don't use anti bacterial soap.

· Don't use Neosporin.

· Don't use Bactine.

· Don't use peroxide.

· Don't go swimming in oceans, lakes, rivers, or chlorinated Swimming Pools.

· Don't wear make up around fresh piercings.

· Don't remove jewelry to clean before stated healing time.

· Don't get body fluids on your healing piercing.

if you are not following this procedure. improper care might be causing the irritation that led to inflammation. it might not be infected. following the proper guidelines of care for a piercing will take care of the infection. usually. if infection persists consult your physician.

Common sense aftercare will resolve most issues with cartilage piercings, generally the biggest issue is hair care products. Shampoo and move over Conditioner will if, not rinsed from the piercing, cause issues (swelling, discomfort, redness etc.).

Irrigation of the piercing after shampooing and using conditioner, will help to rinse the these products out of the piercing. Movement of the jewellery while rinsing the piercing is recommended to help flush the piercing out (jewellery removal during cleaning is not recommended).

The use of "woo woo magic stuff" is not needed, nor recommended (this would be useless aftercare products you have been told to buy or in some cases forced to buy). Simple daily rinsing of the piercing after showering is really all you need, unless you have a great deal of time to screw around with fancy aftercare proceedures.

An infection is characterized by inflamation* (*swelling), redness, warm to the touch, painful when the jewellery is moved and discharge of green puss.

Resolution: Cleaning the piercing daily with a goo clean water flush while moving the jewellery should resolve your issue.

An allergic reaction is characterized by swelling, redness, itchiness at the piercing site, discharge of clear fluid from the piercing and enlargement of the piercing holes (the jewellery looks like it's hovering in the center of a larger hole).

Resolution: Changing the jewellery to high quality materials, ceasing the use of any form of after care product, soap, lotion, cleanser. Flushing the piercing while moving the jewellery under clean running water should resolve the issue. Allergic reactions present themselves within 72 hours, if not sooner, post piercing. This is an indication that you are sensitive to the material or products you have been told to use.

Ear cartilage piercings are one of the slowest healing piercings due to the lack of enhansed circulation in the ear cartilage. So one must keep an eye on the piercing and aftercare is a daily ritual that must be maintained throughout the healing period. Once healed (this can vary from person to person, we don't all heal at the same rate), the piercing should be clean any time your bathing or showering to keep the piercing happy and healthy. If after following the above course of action (24~ 48 hours) you find no relief from your issue, please consult your family doctor.

If it's infected it'll be draining yellow/green and it'll be really swollen and itchy. You can swing by your piercer and ask them to check it out for you.
