If you car engine is running hot and you are watching that temperature gauge climb higher and higher, especially while sitting in traffic, you know something is wrong. There is a normal process of elimination to follow to discover what the problem is, but first focus on the thermostat to see if it is the culprit before running out and buying a new one you may not even need.
*also engine that runs too cool is often cause by a broken thermostat as well
Low engine temp is an indication of a failed thermostat.
Engine coolant temp low, thermostat failed.
Either your thermostat has failed (engine stays cold) or your flap that isolates the airflow through your heater core has failed.
Code 17 is engine cold too long. The normal cause is a failed thermostat.
If the engine isn't getting over 140 F you have a failed thermostat.
I know on the 4.0 liter V6 engine you follow the top radiator hose from the radiator to a metal pipe which is part of the engine thermostat housing that is bolted to the front of the engine . The engine thermostat is inside the thermostat housing
Most likely yes , the engine thermostat has failed in the open position - happened on my 1995 Ford Explorer even though I have always had the cooling system serviced
Need to know your engine size in order to anwer your thermostat problems.
Low coolant, failed thermostat, failed belt, failed water pump, clogged heater core, etcLow coolant, failed thermostat, failed belt, failed water pump, clogged heater core, etc
Failed thermostat.
That is the water pump weep hole. The water pump has failed.
