you nearly always lead a horse from their near side which is their left. make sure you are holding the leadrope or reins tight without them wrapped around your hand. make sure you are slightly ahead of the horse and if he pulls make him wait. open the stable door and apply pressure to the lead rope/riens to make him turn in a semi circle so you can shut the door behind him.

I suppose you have already caught the horse. When getting a horse through a gate or stall door, the safest thing to do is send the horse through the gate or door first, because if you walk ahead of the horse he may jump through the opening on top of you if he got spooked, and if you walk with him, he could squish you.

To get your horse to go through the opening, point with your hand that's holding the rope where you want him to go, if you use a verbal cue to get him to go, use that and he should walk calmly through the gate. Then get him to yield his hindquarters (If you do not do this with your horses, you may have to do some training first. To yield his hindquarters, you bend a little and glare at his hips. With training, this is all it will take, and he'll eventually do it automatically after going through an opening. If he does not yield his hind quarters, then you would take a step with your far foot towards his hindquarters, and then use a long whip or twirl the end of the rope, hitting him with it if you must until he steps over.)

After he is through, you can either walk around to his shoulder, or you could yield his forquarters so your at his shoulders, and then lead him to where ever he is going.
