If it's gas, be careful. If you don't have the original instruction manual you may be able to find one on line under the manufacturer and model, or call the manufacturer. If you can't find that, it's worthwhile investing at least one time in having a professional plumber or other service person (perhaps an authorized service rep from the manufacturer) to come out, show you and write down everything. Frankly, some fire departments offer this service for the novice, because the last thing they need is another needless fire event. Otherwise, it involves gas shut-off valves, on-off-temperature switches (usually red), a pilot light, match holder, matches, and if it has an electronic starter maybe matches aren't needed, and KNOW-HOW. You can ruin a heater if the tank is empty, too.

If it's an electrically fired HW heater, it should be as simple as flipping a switch, setting the thermostat, and making sure there's water in the tank. If it doesn't work, either it is dead or possibly the electrical circuit or fuse is tripped, off or burned out. If it's the latter, it may indicate a problem with the heater itself and may be a safety to avoid some kind of electrical fire or shock condition.

Are we talking gas, charcoal, wood, or what? For gas you need to make sure the burners are off, and either the propane tank or natural gas valve are on. Make sure the grill lid is OPEN. Determine what the ignition type is. If there is a button to press it will either be electronic (when you hold it down you will hear a fast clicking), or manual (you press it hard once and there is one loud snap). If there is no such igniter you will need either a match or a long necked lighter. On some multi burner grills, one burner may be marked with a setting or symbol indicating lighting. Use only that burner. If none are marked you should be OK to use any one you want. With an igniter button, turn the burner on high and press the igniter until it lights. The electronic type you hold down, and the manual type you press repeatedly. If nothing happens after 10 seconds, stop and wait 30 seconds to allow the gas to dissipate before trying again. If you use a match or lighter, you need to apply the flame before turning the gas on. There will be a hole on the front or bottom for access to lighting. Both propane and natural gas are denser than air and will sink through the bottom holes so a long lighter is best so your hands aren't too close to the flame. If you use a match, you can drop it through the grate so it lands near the burner and then turn on the gas. Once one burner is lit, you can turn on any others and they will light themselves. For charcoal, simply read the instructions on the bag. I use a starter chimney. Good luck, and have a great BBQ.

The detailed directions are printed on front of EVERY gas regulator. - However, in general terms, turn regulator switch to OFF for 2 minutes, then to PILOT and depress for one minute, then light pilot or press clicker till it lights. Keep PILOT pressed for 2 more minutes then slowly release it. If it stays on then turn main switch to RUN or ON. - Specific brands may differ slightly.
