Dry eyes are very uncomfortable because they sting, burn and are sometimes painful. This condition is usually due to inadequate tear production. Tears can be deficient for many reasons. Signs and symptoms of dry eyes, which usually affect both eyes, may include:

• Sensitivity to light

• Excessive tearing at times

• Stinging, pain and burning

• Stringy, mucus discharge

• Eye fatigue after short periods of reading

• Occasional blurred vision

• Discomfort wearing contact lenses

Many people do not produce enough tears to keep their eyes lubricated and some of the reasons for poor tear quality are:

• WATER: The watery middle layer which washes away irritants and foreign particles is reduced causing the oil and mucus layers to touch, causing a stringy discharge.

• OIL: A deficiency of lipids, which creates the watery layer which keeps the eyes moist.

• MUCUS: If you don’t have enough mucus, dry spots can form.

Some reasons for reduced tear production:

• Being a postmenopausal woman

• Having tear gland damage

• Having eyelid problems

• Taking medications that can cause dry eyes

• Deficiency in vitamin A

• Wearing contact lenses

• Being older than 50

• Undergoing radiation therapy

• Post laser eye surgery

• Having a medical condition affecting tear production

Take the following precautions to avoid dry eyes symptoms:

• Avoid air/wind blowing in your eyes

• Add moisture to the air with a humidifier

• During long tasks, take frequent breaks

• Position your computer screen below eye level

• Avoid smoke and discontinue smoking

• Blink often

There is a variety of artificial tears that can be purchased over-the-counter and may relieve dry eyes. However, chronic dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) is a medical condition that needs therapy. A doctor may prescribe some medications such as:

• Antibiotics for inflammation

• Eye inserts that work like artificial tears

• Reducing tear loss by closing tear ducts

• Eye drops to control cornea inflammation

If over-the-counter and common sense solutions do not work, consultation with a Doctor Who can rule out disease or adverse reactions to medications may bring relief from the aggravating symptoms of dry eyes.
