There are four 6mm Allen (hex) cap screws on the back of the swing are that clamp the axle. Loosen (do not remove) all four. On the left side of the swing arm by there is a large disc, rotate the disc clockwise to tighten or counterclockwise to loosen the chain. Tighten the four screws and you are done.
you have to loosen the 4 hex bolts on the back of the axle housing the turn the collar down to lossen up to tighten.
Pull the head and remove cover on clutch side of motor loosen and rotate mortar pull chain out threw bottom with sprocket
how to time a 2002 400ex
Loosen the four Allen bolts @ the very back of the swingarm. Do it little @ a time each bolt to keep from cracking the housing. Then rotate the assembly forward & re-tighten. 1 & 1/4 slack is recommended.
definitly
I believe the cam chain tensioner on the 400ex is automatic, as with most if not all of the newer quads.
take the timing chain cover off and with a wire hanger pull it from the bottom to the top sprocket so it doesn't fall.
There isn't a "timing" on a 400ex or any other atv. There is a timing CHAIN, and timing chain tensioner. -my400ex89 "go big or go home"
The 400ex its got a bigger motor... :P
loosen the 4 Allen screws on the bottom of the bearing carrier on the swing arm. (between the sprocket and the rear brake rotor) take a decent sized screw driver and stick it in one of the slots on the round aluminum peice to the left, and pull back on the screw driver, the chain should tighten up.
Yes it would all the models are almost the exact same.
