You burn fat/weight when doing cardio. Which leaves excess fat left over. Like the flab under your arms. Weights are generally used to tighten up skin, tone your muscles. Foods high in protein are a great way to burn fat along with cardio. But it is recommended to use weights when losing weight to tighten up any excess skin. The main reason weights wouldn't be good to lose weight . you need to have your heart rate up to about 142 to start burning calories and speed your metabolism which in turns burns fat. You would have to do triple the work out with weights to lose even a pound.

The biggest thing in weight loss is what and how much you're eating.

If your eating is all wrong, it's pretty much impossible to exercise hard enough to lose weight

If your eating is just a little off, it all depends on how much effort you put into your weight lifting and how consistent you are in your training.

Train hard enough, and often enough, and it's possible to lose weight by doing weights.

But usually cardio exercise are better for weight loss than weight lifting.

The amounts of calories you use up are very firmly related to how much and how long you get your heart rate up, and weight lifting just don't give that sustained increase in heart rate that something like jogging does.

On top of that is that you add weight by muscle growth when doing weights. Endurance exercises don't encourage muscle growth as much as weight lifting, which again makes it a better option when looking strictly at weight loss.
